Charter

Open Source Industry Australia (OSIA) is the national industry body for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) within Australia.

Aims We exist to further the cause of both Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) within the business and government community in Australia.

Definitions OSIA adopts the definition of Open Source as stated on the Open Source Initiative (OSI) web site.

Membership Membership of OSIA is open to individual and corporate residents of Australia that have an interest in furthering the aims of the OSIA. Membership is not limited to companies or individuals in the ICT industry, nor is it limited to companies or individuals that entirely work with or largely specialise in FOSS, however it is recognised that those companies in the ICT sector who deal primarily with FOSS will form the core of the OSIA membership.

Methods OSIA will aim to achieve its goals via any means it considers appropriate, including:

  • Promotion of awareness of the existence and utility of Free and Open Source Software.
  • Demonstration, through case studies, market research, information gathering, and other methodologies, of the specific benefits of the use of Free and Open Source Software with respect to other products that are not of a Free or Open nature.
  • Maintenance of a web site, resource database, and issuance of Press Releases to further the aims of OSIA and its members.
  • Information referral services for the target government and corporate sectors, including education as to companies' rights and obligations with respect to FOSS.
  • Information responses to the media, including correcting misleading or deceptive advertising in relation to FOSS.
  • Information referral to its own members.
  • Advocating legislative or policy changes to Government or corporations.

OSIA's methods will primarily aim to expand the total marketplace for FOSS, rather than promote any individual member's share of that marketplace over the share of other members or non-members.

Associations OSIA recognises several other organisations as compatible with the goals of OSIA, and recognises and supports their interests in the promotion and use of FOSS. This includes organisations such as Linux Australia and the Linux User Groups, The Australian Unix and Open Systems Users' Group, Inc, the state-wide Linux and Open Source professional organisations, and Open Source special interest groups of organisations such as the Australian Computer Society.
